Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup after suffering a knee injury during Saturday’s 4-1 friendly win over Curaçao at Hampden Park in Glasgow, the Scottish Football Association confirmed on May 30, 2026.
The 24-year-old Napoli player limped off in the first half, underwent scans and will return to his club to begin rehabilitation.
Manager Steve Clarke described the news as “devastating”, having called Gilmour an integral part of Scotland’s qualifying campaign; Clarke had earlier said he was “100% worried” while awaiting scan results.
Gilmour won 46 caps and was expected to start Scotland’s Group C opener against Haiti in Boston on June 13.
FIFA rules permit injured players to be replaced up to 24 hours before their first match; Clarke has identified a shortlist of standbys — including Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher, Connor Barron, Andy Irving and Lennon Miller — who could be drafted into the 26-man squad before the tournament begins.
