Apple has largely stepped back from its Vision Pro spatial-computing headset after the October 2025 M5 refresh failed to revive demand, multiple industry reports said April 29–30, 2026.
The $3,499 device — criticised for its 1.3–1.4 pound weight, high price and lack of a clear "killer app" — sold roughly 600,000 units across its lifetime and saw unusually high return rates, sources told MacRumors and other outlets.
The M5 update added a faster chip, a 120Hz refresh rate, about 10% more rendered pixels, a redesigned headband and roughly 30 extra minutes of battery life, but sales remained weak.
Insiders say Apple has broken up the Vision Products Group and reassigned many team members to other priorities, including Siri and a nascent smart-glasses program; a lighter, cheaper Vision Air project was reportedly shelved.
Apple continues to sell the M5 model and has posted roles for a Vision Production Group, but there are no confirmed plans for a next-generation Vision Pro.
The company appears to be shifting emphasis toward wearable smart glasses and smaller AR devices rather than continuing full-scale spatial headsets.
