YouTube announced on April 30, 2026 that picture-in-picture (PiP) is being rolled out globally to all users on Android and iOS, including non-paying accounts.
The phased rollout will reach users "in the coming months" and extends functionality beyond the U.S., where PiP was already available to free users.
For free and Premium Lite users outside the U.S., PiP will apply only to longform, non-music videos; PiP for music and background play remain exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
To use PiP, viewers simply swipe up or press the home button to minimize the app and continue watching in a movable mini-player.
Users may need to update the YouTube app or enable picture-in-picture in device settings.
YouTube said there is no change for U.S. users or existing Premium customers, and framed the move as an improvement to the ad-supported viewing experience.
