PARIS, May 30 (Reuters) - Defending champion Coco Gauff was upset in the third round of the French Open, losing 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 to Russian-born Austrian Anastasia Potapova on Saturday.
Potapova, ranked around the 30s, produced powerful baseline hitting and relentless defence to outlast the world number four in a match played before large empty sections of Court Philippe-Chatrier as many fans watched Paris Saint-Germainâs Champions League final.
The win sends Potapova into the fourth round to face 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya.
Gauff said she had chances but failed to finish key points.
The day continued a chaotic opening week at Roland Garros that already saw top menâs seeds Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic eliminated.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Daria Kasatkina, marking her 100th win as the top-ranked woman.
Other notable moments included Naomi Osaka reaching the last 16 and Matteo Berrettini surviving a five-set marathon to progress.
