French artist JR’s monumental temporary installation La Caverne du Pont Neuf, which envelops Paris’s Pont Neuf in a giant inflatable printed canvas, has had its scheduled public opening postponed after suffering damage in stormy conditions this week.
Organisers said the work, due to open on June 6 and remain accessible until June 28, was torn by strong winds and heavy rain on June 2, exposing the inflatable support structure in photos and videos circulated on social media.
The 120-metre-long, 18-metre-high composition of some 80 air-filled fabric arches — created as a tribute to Christo and Jeanne‑Claude’s 1985 wrapped Pont Neuf — is privately sponsored.
A joint statement from Atelier JR, the Christo and Jeanne‑Claude Foundation and the Amicale des Ponts de Paris said technical experts are assessing the damage and that a new opening date will be set once the inspection is complete.
The project features a soundscape by Thomas Bangalter and an olfactory element by Odore Scola.
