Canadian-born pop star Tate McRae has sparked a wave of criticism at home after appearing in an NBCUniversal promotional spot for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Super Bowl LX that spotlights Team USA. In the ad, released on social media this week as part of NBC’s “Legendary February” campaign, McRae skis through a snowy Italian landscape, name-checks U.S. figure skaters and Lindsey Vonn’s comeback, and teases a weekend of U.S. programming.
The clip, which also features McRae’s single “Nobody’s Girl,” was shared on her Instagram and republished by NBC and media outlets from Feb. 3–5.
Canadian fans and commentators accused the Calgary native of being a “sellout” or “traitor” for promoting another country’s team amid heightened U.S.-Canada tensions; some defenders said it was a routine commercial engagement.
McRae responded on Instagram Stories on Feb. 4 with a childhood photo holding a Canadian flag and the caption asserting her Canadian roots.
The Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan Cortina is due to begin Feb. 6, when NBC and Peacock will broadcast coverage.
